Microblading

Microblading eyebrows before and after pictures are popular on Instagram, but if you haven’t followed them, that’s commendable.

Eyebrows

For those of us who experienced eyebrow trends from the 2000s, it’s common to turn to microblading for a solution.

Microblading is a semi-permanent solution for achieving fuller and natural-looking eyebrows, saving time and effort from pencilling them in daily.

What is microblading?

Sarah explains that microblading is a form of eyebrow architecture that focuses on creating a customized shape for each individual’s face.

The process is done with a precise tool that resembles a pen, with a sloped blade containing 10-12 small needles that gently scratch the surface of the skin without penetrating it.

Microblading eyebrows is a procedure where featherweight strokes with medical-grade pigment are implanted on the epidermis layer of the skin, creating realistic and natural hair strokes.

What is the difference between eyebrow microblading and eyebrow tattooing?

Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that involves depositing pigment into the superficial layers of the skin. The colour typically fades within 18 months, as it is not as deeply implanted as in traditional tattooing.

The microblading technique uses a handheld needle/blade to create natural and fine hair strokes, unlike traditional tattooing methods that use electrical gadgets to penetrate deeper into the skin. The process produces a scratching noise rather than the buzzing sound of a tattoo gun.

What are the differences between microshading and microblading?

While the names may sound similar, it is important to note that microblading and microshading are distinct procedures.

There are differences between microblading and microshading, with microblading providing a precise, hair-like appearance and microshading offering a softer finish similar to using a brow powder or pomade.

Microblading creates hair-like strokes in existing brows, while microshading involves tattooing tiny dots along the brows for a softer, less defined look.

If you’re unsure about which technique to choose, technicians often combine both methods to achieve a realistic and natural finish.

Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to microblading?

Before starting the treatment, a patch or scratch test will be conducted to ensure there are no allergic reactions to the pigments used. While rare, some individuals may be sensitive or allergic.

What is the price of microblading?

Microblading treatment costs 250 AUD, which covers consultation, the initial treatment, and a top-up treatment after 6-8 weeks.

The process of microblading

The brow area is shaped by threading the hairs, cleaning up the area, and preparing it for the treatment.

The numbing process takes 40 minutes using a topical ointment. During this time, I will show the client colour swatches and discuss the best shade for their desired look.

I will start measuring the area around the brows, considering face shape, symmetry, facial features, etc., about 10 minutes after the numbing cream has started working.

The needling process involves gently implanting pigment through featherweight strokes, allowing the colour to seep into the skin. Discomfort during this stage can be addressed by adding another layer of numbing cream, which takes effect after 5 minutes.

I apply a final layer of pigment that sets for 5 minutes, clean the area, and voila – beautiful brows!

A follow-up session is typically scheduled 6-8 weeks after the initial appointment to address any areas where the pigment may not have been taken or healed properly.

Please provide information on the purpose and scheduling of a top-up microblading session

The top-up session typically occurs 6-8 weeks after the initial appointment. During this time, I can evaluate the results, make necessary adjustments, and apply a darker pigment if desired.

What happens during that time?

Please follow the aftercare instructions and refrain from picking or scratching your eyebrows. It is important to note that your eyebrows may start healing over, similar to a tattoo, which could lead to irritation. This is a normal part of the healing process.

During the next ten days, eyebrows may change colour, become flaky, and appear faded, but this is a normal part of the healing process. The final colour and shape will be revealed after about 30 days, and any necessary touch-ups can be done at a second session.

What is the duration of microblading effectiveness?

Microblading typically lasts between 12 and 18 months, with the longevity of the pigment varying based on individual skin types.

People with oilier skin may need a top-up after around 12 months, while those with normal skin can go up to 18 months before needing one.

The pigment in your brows will naturally fade if you don’t have touch-ups every 18 months. There is no scarring or discolouration with the pigments used, so it is not noticeable if you allow them to fade.
